My Miserable Life in Azerbaijan as a Female

When I attended New York City College of Technology, I wrote and submitted a personal essay “Secret Diary” to be published in the school’s writer’s book. I wrote about struggles with identity growing up in Azerbaijan where women were treated like it’s 1950’s (I really hope it’s not as bad these days as it used to be, although as a realist I don’t believe it’s that much different) as well my experience in America in the first two years.

Nonetheless, I started to gain respect from people or, should I say, I started to be accepted, and this was at twelve years old…I was finally going to escape this prison of identity, and reunite with my mom and sister in a beautiful democratic country. Little did I know America was going to be another place where I was going to be discriminated against.
